Bedford, nestled within the City of Bayswater, paints a picture of serene residential life with its array of single-family detached homes. This tranquility is punctuated by bustling pockets of commercial activity along major thoroughfares like Beaufort Street, Grand Promenade, and Walter Road. Though the commercial hubs mainly comprise small businesses, residents find ease with proximity to the Inglewood Coles and shopping havens such as the Galleria Shopping Centre in Morley and Dianella Plaza.
An embodiment of community spirit, Bedford boasts several recreational spaces for its inhabitants. Beaufort Park, with its expansive grassy oval and playground, resonates with the sounds of cricket in summer and soccer during winter months. Grand Promenade Reserve serves as a versatile sports hub, hosting soccer, cricket, basketball, and netball. A unique touch to this reserve is its community hall leased to the Filipino Australian Multicultural Association, fostering cultural ties. RA Cook Reserve, another gem, is a popular haunt for cricket, Australian rules football, hurling, and softball enthusiasts. Despite its vast recreational offerings, it’s noteworthy that Bedford’s allocation for public open spaces falls shy of the state government’s recommended 10% under the liveable neighbourhoods policy.

When the Swan River Colony was founded by European settlers in 1829, the indigenous rights to the land weren’t acknowledged. John Septimus Roe, the colony’s Surveyor General, mapped out the territory along the Swan River into long, narrow “ribbon grants,” each with river frontage to facilitate transportation, the primary means in those days. However, colonists soon found much of the land unsuitable for European agriculture, with sand dunes and swamps dominating the landscape. Fast-forwarding to the 20th century, Bedford saw significant urban development: the 1920s ushered in the extension of Beaufort Street and its tram up to Salisbury Street, triggering the suburb’s initial major development. Gold Estates of Australia Pty Ltd spearheaded this residential progression, turning Bedford Park into a key segment of the growing Bayswater Road District
