This week, we traded our desks for the streets of Perth, joining The Salvation Army on their Friday night outreach program. It was an eye-opening experience that brought us face-to-face with the realities of homelessness in our city.
The Power of a Hot Meal and a Helping Hand
Our journey began in a park, where we met a group of men seeking a warm meal, a listening ear, and essential supplies. The contrast between their situation and the bustling restaurants just meters away was stark and deeply moving.
Throughout the night, we encountered individuals and families facing a range of challenges. From a family living in their car to individuals seeking shelter in the CBD, each person had a unique story that underscored the complexities of homelessness.
REIWA’s Community REInvest in Action
We witnessed firsthand the impact of REIWA’s Community REInvest program. The new custom-designed outreach vehicle, funded by our generous sponsors, is making a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable people.
Equipped with hot boxes, hot water, and ample storage, the vehicle allows The Salvation Army team to efficiently distribute meals, drinks, and essential items like sleeping bags and blankets.
More Than Just a Meal
Beyond the material support, the outreach program provides a vital human connection. The Salvation Army team engaged with individuals, offering support, information about available services, and a sense of community.
A Sobering Reminder
This experience was a powerful reminder that homelessness can affect anyone. The people we met were warm, resilient, and deserving of our compassion and support.
