Suburb Introduction

Karrinyup: A Modern Residential Hub

Balancing Growth with Community Spirit

In the heart of Western Australia, Karrinyup emerged as a rapidly growing residential zone post-1957, following the redesign of its 1904 subdivision to accommodate extensive housing developments. Dominated primarily by single detached residences, the western precinct showcases a myriad of duplexes and unit developments. As a result of its prolonged development phase, Karrinyup homes represent a tapestry of architectural styles from different periods, with many modern two-storey brick-and-tile constructions punctuating its streets.

Community spirit thrives in Karrinyup, with the Karrinyup Shopping Centre serving as its commercial nucleus, housing a diverse array of retail services. The Lake Karrinyup Country Club and the City’s Hamersley Golf Course epitomize the suburb’s penchant for recreational excellence, complemented by myriad parks and reserves. Furthermore, the suburb prides itself on housing a range of educational institutions, including public and private primary schools and the esteemed Saint Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School, all underscored by the community-centric amenities of a local centre and library.

Deep Dive

From Farmland to Fairways

In the early 1840s, the first land grant at Karrinyup was awarded to Samuel Moore. Over the 19th century, this property changed hands multiple times, finally coming under the ownership of W. Maley in 1909. A significant subdivision came in 1904 when Charles Stoneman divided land into sixth-of-an-acre lots; however, the pace of development remained slow with few roads and houses constructed. It wasn’t until the late 1920s that the region saw notable development with the inception of a golf course on Maley’s former land, making the Lake Karrinyup Country Club the standout establishment for years.
